Heart Attack Treatment & Recovery: What You Need to Know

Heart attack and stroke are medical emergencies. Acting quickly can prevent death and permanent disability.

In the Philippines, heart disease and stroke remain among the leading causes of death. However, many lives can be saved by recognizing the warning signs and seeking immediate medical care.

Heart Attack: Warning Signs

Call for emergency help IMMEDIATELY if a person experiences any of the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain or pressure (tightness, heaviness, squeezing sensation)

  • Pain spreading to the left arm, neck, jaw, back, or stomach

  • Shortness of breath

  • Cold sweats

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Sudden dizziness or extreme fatigue

Important Reminders:

  • Symptoms may be milder or atypical in women, older adults, and people with diabetes.

  • Do NOT wait for the pain to go away.

  • Early treatment reduces heart muscle damage.

Stroke: Remember F.A.S.T.

Use the F.A.S.T. method to quickly recognize stroke symptoms:

  • F – Face: One side of the face droops when smiling.

  • A – Arm: One arm is weak or numb.

  • S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking clearly.

  • T – Time: Call emergency services immediately.

Other Stroke Warning Signs:

  • Sudden loss of vision

  • Severe, sudden headache

  • Sudden confusion

  • Loss of balance or dizziness

Why Time Is Critical

  • Heart Attack: Delayed treatment means more heart muscle damage.

  • Stroke: Brain cells begin to die within minutes.

The faster a patient receives medical care, the better the chances of survival and recovery.

What Should You Do?

  • Go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

  • Call for emergency medical assistance.

  • Do NOT drive yourself if possible.

  • Do NOT give food, drinks, or home remedies.

Final Reminder

Knowing the warning signs of heart attack and stroke can save lives. Immediate action is the key to preventing severe complications and long-term disability.
