What is shingles?
Shingles is a severely painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus which causes chickenpox (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthdirect).
Herpes zoster in Asia has been estimated to be 5.0 per 1,000 person-years (PY). Advanced age, immunosuppressed status, and physical trauma are known reactivation factors of the virus.
Am I at risk of having shingles?
Shingles can occur at any age. However, here are some things to take note of:
As you get older, your risk for having shingles and serious complications increases
It is most common in people over 50 years, one reason can be attributed to having a weakened immune system
You can’t catch shingles from someone who has shingles
If you had chickenpox, you are at risk for shingles
You can get chickenpox from someone who has shingles if you have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
How to lower my risk of having shingles?
Get vaccinated if you're:
aged 50 years and over
18 years or older with a weak immune system
You have a weakened immune system if you:
have HIV and AIDS
are having cancer treatment
have had an organ transplant or bone marrow transplant
are receiving other treatment that affects their immune system
