Is Vaping Safer than Smoking?

No tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are safe. For an adult who already smokes cigarettes, switching completely to vaping may reduce exposure to some harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke. But vaping still exposes the lungs and body to potentially harmful substances, and using both products is not a good way to protect your health. The healthiest goal is to stop using both.

What are the health risks?

A vape heats liquid into an aerosol that you inhale; it is not simply water vapor. Depending on the product, that aerosol can contain nicotine, tiny particles, cancer-causing chemicals, flavoring chemicals and metals such as nickel, tin and lead. Product ingredients and exposures vary, and the long-term health effects are still being studied.

  • Nicotine dependence: Most vapes contain nicotine. Cravings and withdrawal can bring irritability, poor sleep and difficulty concentrating, including during the workday.

  • Lung and airway effects: Vaping can irritate the airways; reported concerns include cough, wheezing and lung inflammation. Serious vaping-associated lung injury has occurred, although the risks differ across products and the causes of particular cases should not be assumed to be the same.

  • Heart and blood-vessel concerns: Vape aerosol may contain substances harmful to the cardiovascular system. Research on the size of the long-term risk is still developing.

  • Exposure of people nearby: Exhaled aerosol can contain nicotine, fine particles and other chemicals. Avoid vaping around colleagues, especially in shared indoor spaces.

  • Pregnancy and accidental poisoning: Nicotine is harmful to a developing fetus. Vape liquid can also poison someone if swallowed or absorbed through the skin or eyes; vape devices and liquids should be kept away from children at home.

A realistic quit plan

If you smoke or vape, speak privately with your company clinic, occupational-health team or doctor about a quit plan. Identify the moments that prompt use, such as a coffee break, a stressful meeting or the commute home, and plan a different response for each. Ask about counselling and appropriate cessation treatment rather than assuming a vape is a risk-free quitting tool.

If you develop chest pain, shortness of breath or a persistent cough while smoking or vaping, seek medical assessment rather than dismissing the symptoms as normal.
