Spot Early Signs of Diabetes: Key Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Prevention

Diabetes is a condition where sugar levels in the blood becomes too high. In diabetes, insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, is not produced enough, or the body’s cells becomes insensitive to insulin leading to further increases in blood sugar levels.


What are the Risk factors for Diabetes?

  • 45 years old and older

  • Overweight or obesity

  • Smoking

  • History of diabetes during pregnancy

  • Family history of diabetes (first or second-degree relative)

  • Conditions associated with Insulin resistance:

    • Hypertension

    • High cholesterol levels

    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)


Symptoms of Uncontrolled High Blood Sugar Levels

  • Feeling very thirsty

  • Peeing more frequently than usual, particularly at night

  • Feeling very tired

  • Unintentional loss of weight or loss of muscle bulk

  • Itching around the penis or vagina

  • Blurring of vision


How to Prevent Diabetes?

  • Diet modification

    • Increase vegetable intake

    • Choose brown rice and whole oats over white rice

    • Eat fish at least twice a week (salmon, sardines, tuna)

    • Reduce salt intake to only 1 teaspoon of iodized table salt per day

    • Choose low-fat dairy products

    • When cooking, use healthier oils such as olive, canola, and corn.

    • Minimize the following:

      • Drinks: soft drinks, juices, energy drinks

      • Snacks: chips, cakes, cookies, ice cream

  • Exercise regularly

    • 50 minutes of moderate intensity exercises 3x/week

    • Examples of moderate-intensity exercises:

      • Brisk walking (4 mph or 6.5 kph)

      • Cycling (10 mph or 16kph)

      • Playing badminton or lawn tennis

  • Check and monitor your blood pressure

  • Consult your doctor if you have risk factors and experienced the symptoms above


Diabetes Laboratory Testing Package
