How to Prevent Obesity | Obesity Prevention Awareness Week

ccording to the Department of Health (DOH), the first week of September is Obesity Prevention Awareness Week. Here are some facts you should know about obesity to help you take better care of your physical wellness!


What is obesity?

Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese. Around 27 million Filipinos are overweight and obese, based on the latest survey of the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute.


What causes obesity?

An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugars may cause obesity. It may also be caused by physical inactivity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization.


Common Health Consequences of Obesity

  • Cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke)

  • Diabetes

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis)

  • Cancers (including endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder, kidney, and colon)

How can I prevent obesity?

Here are some obesity prevention tips from our doctors!

  • Limit energy intake from total fats and sugars.

  • Increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts.

  • Engage in regular physical activity (150 minutes spread through the week).
