October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: What Every Woman Needs to Know

Breast cancer remains one of the most pressing health concerns for women worldwide — and for Filipinas, the numbers are especially alarming. According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer was the most common cancer among Filipinos in 2022, making up 31.2% of all recorded cancer cases that year. Globally, it affects around 2.3 million people annually, accounting for about one in eight cancer diagnoses.

The statistics may sound frightening, but there’s hope. Breast cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Awareness, education, and proactive health checks can make a life-saving difference.

 Who is at Risk?

Anyone can develop breast cancer, but some people face higher risks due to a mix of modifiable (things you can change) and non-modifiable (things you cannot change) factors.

Modifiable risks:

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Excessive alcohol intake

  • Smoking

  • Taking contraceptive pills

  • Long-term hormone replacement therapy

Non-modifiable risks:

  • Getting older

  • Family history of breast cancer or inherited genes

  • Past radiation exposure such as frequent X-rays or CT scans

  • History of diabetes or previous cancer

While you cannot control your age or family history, you can make healthier lifestyle choices to help lower your risk.

Early Detection is Key

The most powerful weapon against breast cancer is early detection. Here are steps you can take:

  1. Perform a self-breast exam - The best time is a week after the first day of your period. If you no longer menstruate, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have implants, choose the same day each month. You can learn how to do this properly through this [step-by-step guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrfE6JUwIms).

  1. Watch out for warning signs.

Consult a doctor if you notice:

  •   Lumps in the breast or underarm

  •   Changes in skin texture or nipple appearance

  •   Unusual discharge

  1. Get screened - Women aged 40 and above are encouraged to ask their doctors about mammogram screening.

Why This Matters

Breast cancer doesn’t only affect individuals; it impacts families, careers, and communities. Taking preventive steps and spreading awareness could save lives. This October, let’s not just wear pink — let’s commit to action: check yourself, encourage others to do the same, and support organizations that push for better cancer care in the Philippines.

Early detection is more than medical advice. It is hope put into action.
