Animal Bites and Rabies | Rabies Awareness Month 2026

Rabies Awareness Month

March is recognized as Rabies Awareness Month in the Philippines, as declared in Executive Order No. 84, series of 1999 (DILG). Rabies is a deadly viral infection that occurs after a transdermal bite or scratch from an infected animal, most commonly dogs and cats. While rabies is 100% fatal, it is also 100% preventable with timely and proper vaccination.

When Do You Need Rabies Vaccination?

Not all animal bites or scratches require an anti-rabies vaccine. Vaccination is recommended if bitten or scratched by:

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Cattle

  • Pigs

  • Horses

  • Monkeys

  • Bats

What to Do After an Animal Bite

1. Wash the wound immediately with running water and soap for at least 15 minutes.

2. Seek medical attention immediately at any of the following:

  • Animal Bite Clinics (ABC) – privately owned

  • Animal Bite Treatment Centers (ABTC) – government-owned

  • Hospital Emergency Rooms – private or government

What Happens at an Animal Bite Clinic?

The healthcare professional will:

  • Categorize the bite or scratch based on location, depth, bleeding, and severity.

  • Ask about:

    • Age and vaccination status of the biting animal

    • Allergies to medications or food

    • Previous rabies or tetanus vaccinations

  • Based on the bite category:

    • Category I – No treatment needed; patient may be sent home

    • Category II – Anti-rabies vaccine is administered

    • Category III – Anti-rabies vaccine + Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG)

After Your Clinic Visit

  • Observe the biting animal for 14 days and report any unusual behavior to your healthcare provider.

  • Follow your anti-rabies vaccination schedule carefully. The full course may require 3–4 doses, depending on the bite category.

Pre-Exposure Anti-Rabies Vaccination

For added protection against rabies, consider our pre-exposure anti-rabies vaccine for only ₱850. This vaccine:

  • Eliminates the need for Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) in case of a bite

  • Reduces post-exposure vaccine doses from 5 to just 3

If you are bitten or scratched by your pet, get vaccinated immediately for as low as ₱1,100. This package includes your first consultation and first anti-rabies vaccine dose. Prices may vary depending on the bite category.
