Micronutrient Deficiency

Micronutrients

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that the body needs in small amounts to stay healthy, energetic, and focused. Even if employees eat enough calories, they can still lack key micronutrients, especially when meals are skipped, fast food is common, and work is mostly indoors

Why it matters?

  • Low iron, vitamin B12, and folate can cause anemia, leading to fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and reduced overall performance in daily life.

  • Lack of vitamin D, common in individuals with limited sun exposure or mostly indoor routines, is linked to tiredness, body pains, low mood, and more frequent sickness.

  • Inadequate intake of other vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin C, calcium, and zinc) can weaken immunity, slow recovery from illness, and affect bone and muscle health.

Common Causes of Micronutrient Deficiencies

  • Skipping breakfast or lunch due to busy schedules.

  • Frequent take-out meals, sugary drinks, and snacks instead of balanced meals.

  • Long hours indoors with limited sun exposure and little physical activity.

How to Avoid Micronutrient Deficiency

  1. Eat a colorful plate

Include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein (fish, eggs, lean meat, beans, tofu) in most meals to cover key vitamins and minerals

  1. Don’t skip main meals

Try not to regularly skip breakfast or lunch, because this often leads to fast food or snacks that are high in calories but low in micronutrients.

  1. Choose fortified foods

Use iodized salt and, when available, fortified flour, rice, oil, or milk alternatives to boost intake of iron, iodine, vitamin A, and other essential nutrients.

  1. Get safe sun and move more

Short, safe periods of sun exposure plus regular physical activity support overall health and help with vitamin D status, especially for indoor workers.

  1. Ask before you supplement

If you feel constantly tired, weak, or unwell, consult a health professional for possible tests (e.g., anemia, vitamin D/B12) and follow their advice instead of self-prescribing high-dose supplements.

Healthy micronutrient levels support better energy, focus, mood, and immunity, benefits that contribute to the well-being of individuals.
