Cancer Screening Test: What You Need to Know (And When to Get Tested)

Cancer is easiest to treat when it's caught early, often before any symptoms appear. That's the entire point of screening: it's not about waiting until something feels wrong, it's about checking regularly so problems can be found and treated while they're still manageable.

If you're 30 years old or above, this guide will help you understand which screening tests apply to you, when to start, and how often you should get tested. As always, talk to your company doctor or personal physician to confirm what's right for your specific age and risk factors, and try to schedule your screening around your annual check-up so it becomes a habit, not an afterthought.

Why Cancer Screening Matters

Many cancers develop silently. By the time symptoms show up, the disease may already be at a more advanced and harder to treat stage. Regular screening changes that. It gives doctors the chance to catch abnormalities early, when treatment is simpler, more effective, and less invasive.

Screening isn't a diagnosis. It's the first step. If a result comes back abnormal, the next step is always a follow-up with your doctor.

Recommended Screenings by Cancer Type

Breast Cancer

  • Women 40–49 years: Start around age 40. Get a mammogram (breast x-ray) along with a doctor's breast exam, usually every 2 years or as advised. If you're turning 40, this is the time to ask your doctor when to begin.

  • Women 50–69 years: Continue with a mammogram and breast exam every 2 years (or as advised). Screening is strongly recommended for this age group.

Cervical Cancer

  • Women 30–65 years: Starting at age 30, get a Pap smear. A quick, simple test that collects cells from the cervix, every 3 years. It's one of the most effective tools available for preventing cervical cancer before it develops.

Colorectal Cancer

  • Men and women 50 years and above: There are two main options.

    • A stool test (FOBT/FIT) every year, simple and non-invasive. If the result is positive, a colonoscopy is the next step.

    • A colonoscopy every 10 years, which checks the entire colon for growths and cancer in a single test.

Prostate Cancer

  • Men 50 years and above (earlier if there's a strong family history): A PSA blood test and digital rectal exam, done every 1–2 years as agreed with your doctor. Not every man needs this test, it's a decision best made together with a physician, weighing the benefits and risks.

Lung Cancer

  • High-risk adults (long-term smokers or former heavy smokers): A low-dose CT scan, recommended on a case-by-case basis by a specialist. There's no routine lung screening test for the general population, this is a conversation to have directly with your doctor if you fall into the high-risk category.
