Menopause Symptoms

Menopause is a natural life stage when your monthly period stops permanently and you can no longer get pregnant naturally. Most women reach menopause between 45–55 years old; in the Philippines, the average is about 48.

Common symptoms

  • Irregular or skipping periods before they stop completely

  • Hot flashes and night sweats (sudden heat, sweating, palpitations)

  • Poor sleep and daytime fatigue

  • Mood changes: irritability, anxiety, or feeling low

  • “Brain fog”: difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, slower recall in meetings

  • Headaches, joint or muscle pains, palpitations

  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort with sex, more frequent urination or mild leaks

Symptoms vary: some women barely notice changes, while others find that symptoms affect their work performance and relationships.

Your long-term health

After menopause, the risk of heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis (weak bones) increases, so regular health checks are important.

  • Know your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol

  • Ask your doctor if you need a bone density test.

  • Avoid smoking, and limit alcohol

  • Maintain a healthy weight to protect your heart and bones.

Practical tips for the corporate workplace

  • Stay active: Take the stairs when you can, stand and stretch every 30–60 minutes, and aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking most days.

  • Eat smart: Choose more vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains; cut down on sugary drinks and deep-fried food.

  • Keep cool: Dress in layers, keep a fan or foldable pamaypay at your desk, and sip cool water during the day to ease hot flashes.

  • Support your bones: Include calcium- and vitamin D–rich foods; ask your doctor about supplements if needed.

  • Protect your mind: Prioritize sleep, schedule short relaxation or breathing breaks, and reach out to trusted colleagues, friends, or family for support.

If symptoms are disturbing your sleep, productivity, or quality of life, talk to a doctor; there are safe hormonal and non-hormonal treatments that can help.
