Understanding Leptospirosis: What You Need to Know and How to Prevent It

The Philippines has been hit hard by Typhoon Carina, bringing intense rains and flooding. The Department of Health (DOH) is on high alert due to the bad weather, reminding everyone about the rising risk of leptospirosis infection. Leptospirosis is a disease that is contracted through contact with urine of animals with the bacteria Leptospira (e.g. rats). It can enter through broken skin, open wounds or be ingested.


How is Leptospirosis transmitted?

  • Direct contact with pee (urine) or reproductive fluids from infected animals

  • Contact with contaminated water or soil containing urine or body fluids from infected animals, especially after hurricanes, flooding, or heavy rainfall

  • Eating or drinking food or water contaminated by the urine of an infected animal


What are the Symptoms of Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis can cause a wide range of symptoms, these include:

  • Fever

  • Red eyes

  • Stomach pain

  • Muscle ache

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Trouble urinating


What will happen if Leptospirosis is left untreated?

When neglected and not treated immediately, severe leptospirosis cases can cause the following:

  • Kidney failure

  • Lung Bleeding

  • Death


How do I avoid getting Leptospirosis?

  • Avoid walking through or swimming in floods

  • Wear boots and gloves during rainy days

  • Maintain cleanliness at home and in your surroundings


What to do if I am at risk of Leptospirosis?

If contact with flood cannot be avoided, the antibiotic Doxycycline should be taken immediately after to prevent leptospirosis. Consult with your doctor to know more about proper dosage.
