How to Deal with Animal Bites | Rabies Awareness Month 2024

Updated: Mar 24

Rabies Awareness Month

March is Rabies Awareness Month according to Executive Order No.84, series of 1999 (DILG). Rabies is a human infection that occurs after a transdermal bite or scratch by an infected animal, usually a dog or cat. Although it is 100% fatal, it is 100% preventable.

Contrary to popular belief, not all animal bites and scratches need anti-rabies vaccine. Rabies vaccines are recommended only if you get bitten or scratched by the following animals:

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Cattles

  • Pigs

  • Horses

  • Monkeys

  • Bats

What to do when I get bitten/scratched?

  • Wash the affected area with running water and soap for a minimum of 15 minutes

  • Visit an Animal Bite Professional immediately in any of the following institutions:

    • Animal Bite Clinics (ABC) - owned by private companies

    • Animal BIte Treatment Centers (ABTC) - government-owned

    • Any hospital Emergency Room - can either be private or government-owned

What will happen to me at the Animal Bite Clinic?

  • The doctor categorizes the bite/scratch area based on location, depth, extent, and any bleeding

  • What else should I be mentioning to the doctor?

    • Age and vaccination status of the biting animal

    • Allergies to any food or medication

    • Previous rabies and tetanus immunizations, and if completed or not

  • Depending on the category, you may

    • Be sent home (Category I)

    • Receive an Anti-rabies vaccine (Category II)

    • Receive a combination Anti-rabies vaccine and Rabies Immunoglobulin (Category III)

What should I do after the visit at the clinic?

  • Observe the biting animal for 14 days, and report any changes in behavior in the animal to the healthcare team

  • Promptly follow the schedule of your Anti-rabies shots as it may take a total of 3-4 doses to be completely immunized for Rabies

If you want to ensure that you are protected from rabies, you may also avail our pre-exposure anti-rabies shot for only P850. Our pre-exposure anti-rabies vaccine eliminates the need for rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) in case of a biting incident and reduces post-exposure vaccine regimen from 5 to just 3 shots. If you are bitten or scratched by your pet, get vaccinated immediately for as low as P1100. This vaccine package is inclusive of a 1st visit package that includes consultation and 1st dose of anti-rabies vaccine. Note that actual rate depends on bite category.
